Dentist issues warning over 'subtle' signs on your teeth that should never be ignored

A dentist has sounded the alarm on subtle signs in your teeth that you shouldn't take lightly - as they could lead to tooth loss and hit your wallet hard.

Andrej Bozic, an oral health expert at Dentum, is highlighting the importance of not ignoring any changes in the colour of your teeth, such as white, brown or black spots, which could be early warning signs of decay.

"Small white, brown, or black spots on the teeth should not be dismissed lightly, as they could be early indicators of decay," Dr Bozic explained. "These discolourations are often the result of bacterial plaque buildup, which can erode the enamel and lead to cavities if left untreated."

Dr Bozic cautioned that neglecting tooth decay can lead to a rapid deterioration of dental health, potentially resulting in the need for more complex and expensive treatments. He continued: "If decay reaches the inner layers of the tooth, it can lead to infection and inflammation of the dental pulp, requiring root canal therapy to save the tooth. In severe cases, untreated decay can lead to tooth loss, which may require expensive restorative procedures such as dental implants or bridges, which can set you back hundreds if not thousands of pounds."

To combat decay and maintain a healthy mouth, Dr Bozic advises patients to take proactive steps, reports Bristol Live. "Maintaining rigorous oral hygiene practices is crucial," he advised. "Brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and flossing daily can help remove plaque and bacteria from the teeth, reducing the risk of decay."

In addition to regular brushing and flossing, Dr Bozic recommended limiting the consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages. He said: "These substances can contribute to enamel erosion and increase the risk of decay. Choosing healthier snack options and drinking water instead of sugary beverages can help protect tooth enamel."

Regular dental check-ups are crucial for detecting and addressing issues early on. "Visiting the dentist regularly allows us to identify decay and other dental issues in a timely manner," Dr Bozic explained. "Your dentist can perform thorough examinations, including dental X-rays, to detect decay in its early stages and provide appropriate interventions to prevent further damage."

Dr Bozic concludes with a sobering reminder of the potential consequences of ignoring visible tooth discolouration. "Failing to address these subtle warning signs can lead to significant oral health problems and financial burdens," he cautioned. "Taking proactive steps to address discolouration can safeguard both your smile and your wallet in the long run."
